BaadeCuttlefish

A unique experience with such a large congregation of cuttlefish found no-where else in the world!

As an Adelaide scuba diver, I have made the trip to Point Lowly several times over the last 5 years purely to dive with the cuttlefish. This is a unique experience with such a large congregation of cuttlefish found no-where else in the world! It is an amazing world below the waves as the male cuttlefish go about, paying absolutely no attention to the divers, attempting to impress the ladies. They use all sorts of tricks from changing colour and texture, flattening themselves out to appear larger, to even possing as a female to sneak past dominate males!

I was shocked when I heard that this amazing natural spectacule was at risk due to a mining expansion. While I acknowledge the ultimate expansion of Olympic Dam to assist South Australia's economy, what make's this so disapointing is that there are other alternatives that don't involve risking the destruction of this phenomenon at Point Lowly.

Whyalla's and South Australia's economy benefits substantially from these amazing creatures. I am always amazed at the amount ot overseas tourists, besides the large amount of inter-state divers, I meet that have travelled to South Australia purely to meet the local cuttlefish.

I only hope commonsense will prevail and human greed doesn't spell the end of this wonderful event.
