People before profit
II would like to add my voice to the concern over the proposed industrial plants to be established at Point Lowly. Anyone who drives to Point Lowly cannot help seeing the detrimental effect that Santos plant has on the environment of the area. It is quite clear that the current position of the Santos refinery and loading pier is inappropriate and we are all the poorer because of the decision, made 25 years ago, to site the refinery at Point Lowly.
So here we are, in the more enlightened times of the 21st century, and we want to repeat the mistakes of the past by building a desalination plant, Petrochemical refinery and deep sea port at Point Lowly. Have we not learned anything? Are we so blind, that we cannot see that we are selling out our children’s future for a few dollars today.
It really is time to say “No more industry at Point Lowly”. There are alternative locations for these industries but Point Lowly is not one of them. Point Lowly belongs to us, the residents of Whyalla, for our enjoyment and to be conserved for our children and grandchildren to enjoy in the future.
Dr. Andrew Melville-Smith.
