Get involved! Cuttlefish threatened by development

Most Whyalla residents would now be aware that the clash between cuttlefish and the proposed desalination plant has become one if the biggest controversies of the year.

But do we all understand what the commotion is about?

The truth is I still don’t understand 100% so I’m certain that you may feel the same way.

Realistically we know that the proposal located at Point Lowly is going to cause negative effects to the rare habitat of these magnificent creatures.

There have been many side effects suggested by several people, who don’t just include locals.

One issue that the desal-plant will create is that it will draw up a large amount of food that sea creatures feed off and a lot of their offspring (eggs).

It has also been said that if certain metals are transported through the water that it will have the potential to harm and kill off marine life.

Whyalla and it’s surrounding waters is among only a very small number of habitats for the spectacular breed and it would be sad to see them eventually decrease.

In the 1990’s the cuttlefish had become endangered by over fishing, but thankfully enough was done to keep them protected.

Enthusiasts and tourists have visited from all over the world to document, dive, research or just experience such a significant encounter with the creatures.

If the matter has become to such a big deal then its obvious if the desalination plant does go ahead for construction, it would have to take some type of toll onto the homes of cuttlefish.

This would then again cause another threat to the species.

The Spencer Gulf is renound for its recreational fishing as well, which could also potentially be effected by the desal-plant.
