Residents worried about Pt Lowly plans: MP

ABC News Tuesday August 26. 2008.

Greens' MP Mark Parnell says the South Australian Government needs to start taking the concerns of Point Lowly residents seriously.

During a visit to Whyalla yesterday, Mr Parnell had talks with the city council and local action groups over the proposed Point Lowly development.

A deep-sea port and a desalination plant have both been earmarked for the area.

Mr Parnell says community fears about the impact on the local cuttlefish population are very real.

"I think that they're right in having very serious concerns about whether the giant cuttlefish will survive more refineries and deep-sea ports and desalination plants," he said.

Mark Parnell says "Hands Off Lowly"

I've just spent a great day with members of the Cuttlefish Coast Coalition visiting Point Lowly and talking with them about their campaign to prevent further industrialisation of this important part of the Spencer Gulf coast. Plans for more refineries and ore shipping facilities are being developed without any meaningful engagement with the local community. Point Lowly is an important recreational area for Whyalla as well as being the home of the world-famous Giant Cuttlefish. The prospect of these animals surviving is remote. If the desalination plant doesn't get them, the ore-loading facility will.
