CUTTLEFISH EXTINCTION AGENDA

Save Point Lowly says the first version of Marine Park zoning, which reduces the Cuttlefish protection area by 90% is a direct attack on the survival of the Cuttlefish; and any pretence that this is a balance between in industry and the Cuttlefish can be seen for what it is, the industrialization of the Point Lowly Peninsula.

Group spokesperson, Dr Andrew Melville-Smith said, “The Government had the opportunity to do the right thing, but now their real intention is there for all to see.”

“The Rann Government want the Cuttlefish to become extinct so they can make Point Lowly an industrial wasteland with leaky petrochemical facilities, toxic desalination and bulk ports exporting minerals.”

“Marine Parks are a great idea. The No-Take zones have been scientifically proven to be effective conservation tools which protect the breeding fish and maintain fish numbers throughout the whole marine park.”

“The Cuttlefish breeding zones are well known to the government, to scientists, residents and to fishers, so the reduction can only be seen as a deliberately risking the Cuttlefish’s survival.”

The Marine Parks Manager, Chris Thomas says “the process has to be a balancing act between the environment and industry’”

Dr Andrew Melville-Smith said “Clearly Rann’s definition of ‘balance;’ is to tilt the scales firmly in favour of big business and this leaves the way open for industry to gobble up 90% of the Cuttlefish protected area.”

Notice the small green area around the words "Black Point" and compare that with the grey area in the map above.

It becomes very obvious that the current Rann Labor Government stratgy is to cause the extinction of the cuttlefish, leave the way open to industrialize the entire Point Lowly Peninsula.

The proposal also demonstrates very clearly, that if it isn't in Adelaide, it doesn't matter.
