Whyalla residents show they care.

Tuesday 9th December 2008.

120 residents packed the Palms Function room at the Westlands Hotel on Tuesday night, sending a clear message to the South Australian Government that Whyalla residents care about Point Lowly.

Hosted by the Cuttlefish Coast Coalition, the meeting highlighted the need to offer alternatives to the proposed industry at Point Lowly rather than just opposing the development.

A lecture by Dr.Bronwyn Gillanders on the unique species of Giant Cuttlefish that breeds around Point Lowly, highlighted the dangers of building a desalination plant in a gulf with restricted tidal flow.

The meeting concluded with an excellent presentation of the possibilities for an alternative deep-water port, 30Km to the South of Whyalla. The honest assessment of the pros and cons of both alternatives, made it clear to everyone that this was a serious proposition that needed to be put to the Rann Government as the residents preferred choice.
