Whyalla community representatives travel to Adelaide to lodge unique petition.
The SA Government’s Geographical Names unit, has been conducting a public consultation process over the names for suburb localities along the Whyalla coastline to assist emergency services personnel locate specific rural residences. One of the issues that has come to light is the renaming the Point Lowly peninsula to Port Bonython and this issue has caused community outrage like no other.
The consultation period ended on Monday and to mark its end, Tom Cheesman, Project Officer of the Save Point Lowly Group, travelled to Adelaide to present a unique and colourful petition to the South Australian Geographical Names Unit representative Mr Bill Watt, to demonstrate the intense feelings the Whyalla Community had for the peninsula that Matthew Flinders named in 1802 as “Point Lowly”.
