A better port on Spencer Gulf
Options for another industrial estate and port are currently under consideration for the scenic Lowly Peninsula north of Whyalla.
Many people are rightly concerned about the uncertainties, risks, compromises and sacrifices which are associated with such options at the neck of Spencer Gulf.

A better location
A much better location is a site south of Whyalla where the main root channel of the Gulf is consistently several kilometres wide and the depth of water is 20 metres or more.
The deep water required for export berths can be reached from the western shore by a jetty a little over three kilometres in length. At latitude 33 degrees 15 minutes no disturbance of mangroves ecosystems is involved.
Adjoining this site there is an extensive area of flat pastoral land with no physical attributes to materially compromise its use as an industrial estate. This location has the potential to serve exports from Eyre Peninsula and from the north of the State.
For the long term wellbeing of the marine eco-system and all the communities around the Gulf we have to adopt the best site for these new industrial tools for our economy and work together to make the most appropriate developments occur.
